Insomnia: When to Get Help

Insomnia may be caused by an underlying medical condition, or it could lead to one. If you have trouble sleeping at night and it has become a pattern, then it is best that you have yourself checked by the doctor right away. In addition, if the sleeplessness affects your daily life or you often feel abnormally tired during the day, it is about time you get help.

The doctor will have you undergo tests to determine the causes of insomnia and the most appropriate treatment method. You may have to undergo a physical exam, and in some cases, you may need to have blood tests. This is especially true if the doctor suspects you of having a thyroid problem, which is often linked to insomnia. Expect that you will be asked questions regarding your lifestyle and sleep habits.

Depending on the severity of your sleeping problem, the doctor may require you to keep a sleep diary for a few weeks in order to track your sleeping pattern. If the doctor is unable to rule out insomnia or suspects you of having other sleeping problems, you may also be subjected to a sleep study where you have to sleep in a center for night. You will be monitored as you sleep, keeping track of your body's activities.
